La mafia non è mai un argomento ‘semplice’ e, infatti quello che Saverio Paletta propone è un lavoro scrupoloso e attento fin nei minimi dettagli. Fulcro del libro la vicenda di Alfio Cariati, Testimone di Giustizia, un ‘semplice’ cittadino che, venuto a contatto con delle realtà di dubbia legalità, decide di parlare.
Gli atti mafiosi non godono del beneficio della legge, ma in talune realtà hanno il consenso tacito di chi passivamente vi assiste e vi convive, quindi non denuncia. Centrale per la vicenda di Alfio la normativa nella quale sono presenti le definizioni di pentito, collaboratore di giustizia e il testimone. Come collaboratore di giustizia si definisce una persona che ha commesso dei crimini e che ad un certo punto, decide di collaborare con la giustizia. Il testimone è, invece, un libero cittadino che assiste ad un fatto di rilievo e decide di riportare quanto ha visto in una sede legale.
